Heidy’s Success Story at the PIC

Heidy 1 Heidy’s journey with the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council (PIC) began during the summer of 2023 when she participated in the first-ever Nobles County Internship Program. At the time, Heidy was studying Human Services at Urshan University and searching for opportunities that would allow her to gain practical experience in the field.

Reflecting on her internship experience, Heidy shared: “During the summer after my junior year of college, I was searching for something that would expand my understanding of the field within our community. Through the internship, I discovered various opportunities in our town, and luckily, I was offered a part-time job at the Private Industry Council, which eventually turned into my full-time position.”

Heidy’s internship was a success, leading to a job offer as a Case Aide at PIC, where she now works with SNAP cases, assists at the front desk, and helps with various programs. Her role allows her to apply her passion for helping individuals, particularly in job searches and assisting with community resources.

“Working at PIC has been a great experience. I enjoy working with my coworkers and learning new things every day,” Heidy remarked. “I love that I get to interact with people and help them apply for jobs. It’s rewarding to know that I am making a difference in their lives.”

Recently, Heidy decided to participate in the Community Interpreter Program, an opportunity offered through PIC's Pathways to Prosperity programs. Growing up in a diverse community and often serving as an interpreter for her parents, friends, and family, Heidy recognized the importance of bridging language barriers. This experience gave her a unique perspective on the critical role interpreters play in connecting people.

“From a young age, I saw the importance of language. My time at PIC has only reaffirmed my belief in the importance of interpreting and motivated me to continue to grow in this area. So when the opportunity of community interpreting was made available, there was no hesitation— I knew it was something I had to do,” Heidy shared.

The decision to take the interpreting course required dedication and perseverance, as Heidy had to balance work and study. With the support and encouragement of her colleagues at the PIC, Heidy completed the program, passing with an impressive 91%. The skills she gained from the program have greatly enhanced her ability to assist clients, particularly those who face language barriers and have reinforced her commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

“Interpreting has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. It has allowed me to use my skills to help others, to break down barriers, and to make a real difference. I am grateful for the program and excited for the opportunities ahead.”

Heidy’s dedication to her work, combined with the opportunities provided by PIC, has opened doors for both professional growth and community impact. Her journey shows how workforce development programs like the Nobles County Internship Program and Pathways to Prosperity are not only advancing careers but also building stronger communities.
